I'd love to attend the Tribe Reboot Party, but I have to ask: Why no live music at a venue like 12 Galaxies?
I understand that a vast majority of Tribers prefer their music spun, but can't there be a mix of DJs and musicians instead of all DJs all night?

Re: No live music?
Mon, October 9, 2006 - 1:18 PMi'm only speaking from my p.o.v. (i.e., in no official capacity): the djs are providing atmosphere (i.e., background music) and bands don't tend to do that as well (instrumental music being the exception.) -

Re: No live music?
Mon, October 9, 2006 - 1:46 PM90+ decibels is no longer just background music. it's fucking loud, too loud to think, let alone talk.

Re: No live music?
Thu, October 12, 2006 - 4:14 PMI'm glad you included (instrumental music being the exception) because jazz musicians like myself play events all the time where we're paid to play lower-volume background music (e.g. at art galleries, wedding receptions, fashion shows, cocktail parties)...
Anyways, how was the party?> -

I'm actually going to be booking dance shows with live music soon, and I'll likely be booking mostly jazz bands. Contact me for more info.

Re: No live music?
Mon, October 9, 2006 - 2:23 PMyeah, this is a social event. a chance for people to get together and meet up. Not really a stand there and watch a band kind of thing.
When a band's playing it's more difficult to talk to one another. -

Re: No live music?
Mon, October 9, 2006 - 2:43 PMindeed... I'm sure the other DJs and myself will try to play conversation-friendly music. -

Re: No live music?
Mon, October 9, 2006 - 8:22 PMI book live shows, and I also play live music for parties, and I agree that for a social meet-up kind of environment DJs would be preferable to live musicians. Most musicians hate being background music unless it pays really well.
Let's just hope the DJs play something interesting and not technocrap.

Mon, October 9, 2006 - 10:15 PMbut some of us find technocrap interesting... <cries a river>
...i think we're up to the job. -

Re: No live music?
Tue, October 10, 2006 - 9:42 AMHere's a question for Brian and the party committee... and since it benifits the other DJs to know, I'll ask it in the public forum:
I understand that the DJs will be playing music that is condusive to conversations and meet-and-greets. But wil there be any dancing? Not that you can STOP people from dancing, but are you planning for a certain space to be used in that capacity? Knowing that should help determine what music we bring with us.
Danke. -

Thu, October 12, 2006 - 4:33 PM<You cannot stop people from dancing. You can only hope to contain them.>
San Francisco used to have a law against dancing. It came from two situations:
(1) Gay men were dancing together (holding each other, you know, waltzing, swing dancing, etc.). The SFPD hated that, so they raided places where people danced together. Thus was born dancing apart, and the disco phenomenon where you couldn't tell whether two people were dancing "with" each other or just getting into the groove by themselves.
(2) Hippies. In an effort to drive hippies and rock shows out of SF, city hall passed an ordinance banning dancing without a police permit. Police permits were very hard to come by because the SFPD could refuse permits based on any arbitrary criteria they chose. Thus, dancing was all but banned, except in places like the major hotels downtown, etc. Thus was born the rock "concert" where people sat and listened to music instead of dancing to it.
Then city hall passed laws requiring "entertainment permits" which banned everything including poetry readings. It was only a few years ago the city hall relented and took poetry readings and non-amplified music out of the realm of the entertainment permit requirement. Otherwise the entertainment permit is still on the books.

Re: No live music?
Thu, October 12, 2006 - 7:24 PMas one of the founding members of the san francisco late night coalition, and the spokesperson for the group for almost five years, i have never heard this particular recounting of the reason for the old requirement for a dancehall permit (which we succeeded in having made redundant for someone with an entertainment permit), nor of dancing in and of itself being a reason for permits being refused.
though certainly the police had their own agendas, and they rarely considered at all that adult citizens should decide on our own how we want to spend our leisure hours, but we pushed the creation of an entertainment commission to oversee all permitting, and therefore took it away from the police (who would, of course, be happiest if we all went home at 9 pm and slept quietly all night, hence creating no problems).
however, we have never been as bad as new york city, where the laws specifiy that if two people are "dancing" then a cabaret permit is required -- which of course, you can't get. bastards.
i've certainly never heard that disco came out of gay people dancing in san francisco. david, where did you learn that? i'd love to know more about that.
i say dance wherever you want, and if anyone gives you any shit about it, let me know. ;^)

Re: No live music?
Tue, October 10, 2006 - 11:02 AMAs 12 Galaxies holds twice as many people as are on this tribe, I am pretty sure there will be ample room for both dancing and chatting.
